How to Pick the Right Rug Size
The most common sizing mistake is buying too small. A rug that "floats" in the middle of a room with no furniture touching it makes the space feel disconnected. Use the room-by-room guides below to size your rug correctly before you order.
Living Room
All four legs of the sofa don't need to sit on the rug, but at minimum the front legs should. For a standard living room, 8' x 10' or 9' x 12' works for most seating arrangements. Leave 12"-18" of bare floor visible between the rug edge and the walls.
Bedroom
The rug should extend 18"-24" beyond the sides and foot of the bed, so your feet land on wool rather than bare floor when getting in and out. A queen or king bed usually needs a 9' x 12' rug; smaller rooms can use two runners placed on each side of the bed instead.
Stairs
Stair runners are sold by length and typically come in a standard width of 27"-36". Leave 3"-4" of bare stair visible on each side of the runner. Measure the full run of the staircase, including landings, before ordering — runners are usually cut to length rather than sold pre-cut.
Corridor / Hallway
A hallway runner should leave 4"-6" of bare floor on each side, so it doesn't touch the baseboards. Standard runner width is 2'6" to 3', in lengths from 8' up to 14' or custom-made to fit your corridor exactly.
